By Robert Tzudiker and Claribel Cone
Phoenix, Arizona: Imaginative Idea-Realistic Editions, INK., 1992. Edition of 250.

10.75 x 8.75"; 23 pages. Text composed in Linotype Palatino with display lines in handset Libra and Solemnis foundry types. Printed on 100 percent rag Arches Text paper. Claribel Cone: "Anyone can stick to the facts. It takes a greater courage to eschew mere fact in a quest for deeper truths. This collection of ten short essays is a sly attempt to make mincemeat of our understanding of the world. The author combines tiny grains of fact with absurd fantasy, all couched in the somber tones of a true scientist. Each story is accompanied by a tipped-in full color, full page reproduction of [my] paintings.

"In the words of the famous herpetologist from the story “Eggs”: ’If I'd been with Sheila, I'd have tenure now.’

Robert Tzudiker and Claribel Cone have been collaborators since they met while working at the Alfred Munn theatre in Santa Fe, New Mexico. She played the cello and made posters for his Chekhov production of The Bear. They have been collaborators on several projects since then.”

These tongue-in-cheek (but which cheek?) mini-essays may remind you of something you read in the last issue of Northsoutheastandwest Review of Rabid Anthropoopology, but they are published for the first time here.

A Cuttlefish Compendium Cuttle
Portraits and Cuttle Quips
By Claribel Cone
Mill Valley, California: Viking Dog Press / Conehenge Studios, 2008.
Edition of 21.

11 x 8.5"; 18 pages. Typefaces: Monotype Corsiva for the captions; Verdana for the preface and colophon. Paper: Hahnemühle Bugra.

Claribel Cone: "Cuttlefish Compendium vividly displays watercolors and cuttlefish quips: 'Although my relatives are mostly mollusks, octopus and squid – I prefer the company of coral societies.'"

Claribel Cone, Preface: "I thought I was drawing octopuses. It was completely dark in the Barcelona aquarium surrounded by low ledges of black velvet with small children streaming around a large brightly lit tank. There were maybe 90 octopuses floating among the fans and corals – all transparent with salmon pink and sky blue and lime green colored tubes and rills.

"One saw me and left his date to swim right up to the glass. He opened his zigzag shaped eye till it became a large floating orb – yes, he hypnotized me! ...

"Later I read a sign which informed me I had not been drawing octopus at all – this was a special Barcelona exhibition of romantic interlude cuttlefish, these romantic tango loving animals lurking and suspended in their coral dance halls...."
