“I like ambiguity in my work (in a playful sense). We are ambiguous creatures living in an ambiguous world (which are our realities?). By taking an ambiguous position, I'm not stating this is how it is or this is how you should read my work. I like there to be space for the imagination to play and explore — to run with the work. Maybe, this is where the real art takes place?”

We came from the Stars
By Darren Marsh
[Manchester, England]: Darren Marsh, 2023. Edition of 12.

30 pages; Dimensions 15cm x 15cm x 15cm, Unfolded 18cm x 18cm x 18cm. Polyhedron . Materials: Canon Chromalife 100+ Inkjet print on 120gsm paper; Archival PVA. Mapping images accredited to IAU and Sky & Telescope. Creative Commons By 3.0. Edited in Adobe Photoshop.

Darren Marsh: “’We came from the Stars’ is a star shaped polyhedron constructed from a star chart mapped across 30 individual pages. Each page has been duplex printed then folded into an origami boat which may be opened and read. Collectively all pages can be opened to form a second celestial object.

"Stars are the birthplace of nearly every known element in the universe and essential to all life on earth. Most of the elements in our bodies were formed in stars over the course of billions of years.

“The idea we came from the stars is also rooted in many human cultures and civilisations. At different places and at different times humans have divided and organised celestial objects to create their own unique constellation cultures. Stories once held in the sky, inspired by myth, legend and cultural belief.

“Celestial wayfaring or steering by the stars is a method of determining one’s position on earth based on observations of astronomical bodies in the night sky. Fifty-eight stars across thirty-eight constellations hold a special status in the field of celestial navigation; stars that once guided us safely across earth’s oceans and seas, predicted events such as seasons and tides and connected us with the world around us.

“Books and stars both tell their stories. We are all looking at the same sky — just with different filters."

Darren Marsh: "weneverstoodapart is a visual poem about our relationship with other beings, both human and non-human. We have constructed our worlds with humans as the dominant or central character, and so find ourselves in an ecological and political era which mirrors the impact this brings to all life and the planet.

“A civilisation that chooses to drive ecological change, while refusing to acknowledge its own interdependence and interconnectedness, psychologically disconnects and isolates itself from itself and the entire biosphere. To act as if the world beyond humans is composed of "things" for human use is a catastrophic assault on the diversity, complexity, abundance, and beauty of life. We are entangled with other beings we cannot live without.”

Darren Marsh: "We code and re-code our worlds to create a sense of order and meaning from within a perceived chaos. Information is not meaning. Neither is information something that just exists out there in the world. It is a construct carried by physical markers and as such can be hacked into variable combinations.

“This project began with the proposition of creating a book using its own ISBN as a start point. An ISBN is an international machine readable code used to recognize and identify the product form of books. It contains information pertaining to language, publisher and publication, but not the work inside. So, what happens when the systems <ProductIdentifier> the ISBN becomes the content? How is it re-coded? And how is it re-read?"
