Colophon: "Perhaps like many people, we tended to connect the Women's Suffrage Movement with images of early 20th-century parades and pickets. However, a chance encounter with a wonderful little book, Women of the Suffrage Movement by Janice E. Ruth & Evelyn Sinclair ..., reminded us of the pre-Civil War beginnings of the campaign and the remarkable women who supported it.
"This book from the Library of Congress' Women Who Dare series acted as inspiration for our piece, Victorian Splendor. Also helpful to us in our research were the informative website – http://womenshistory.about.com and the Declaration of Rights and Sentiments by Elizabeth Cady Stanton."

Fractured Landscapes
By Laurie Spitz and Amee J. Pollack
New York: Spitz & Pollack, 2006. Edition of 12.
9.375 x 7.25" split-page accordion structure. Collage of images from original photographs. Constructed with Japanese inspired sewn spine and paper slipcase. Materials: elephant hide cardstock; suede; mulberry paper; and, geometric laser printed labels.
Laurie Spitz and Amee J. Pollack: "The split-page accordion structure houses images which began as original photographs of urban reflections on cars. The motivation for this piece was to find beauty even in unnatural, man-made surfaces of a modern, impersonal city. The structure allows the images to swing free and be seen in more than one permutation. It also affords the opportunity for the piece to be displayed like a star book, from a codex to a full 360 degree angle. An added layered mosaic grid transforms abstraction into abstraction as the city landscapes grow even more surreal."

Pop-up Library Series
Amee Pollack: "Enter a world of living history where handmade pop-ups, movables and miniature pamphlets offer an unexpected glimpse of the so-called progress of civilization. Professor Pinkerton is a fictional character we made up — although we like to think of him as a relative of the famous Pinkerton Detectives of the Old Wild West. In other words, he's a sleuth of history. As for the initials 'M.J." we just like the sound of them." |
