One Woman's Sewing Bee
By Linda K. Smith. A collection of descriptive essays about pieces of clothing the author, the "one woman" of the title, would like to sew. These are accompanied by accounts of garment practices and beliefs, along with some secrets about clothing that Smith discovered in her readings on the subject. Vignettes of memories make up a third strand of text. Together, the three strands entwine, as Smith explores both the universal and personal in the ordinary structure of clothing and the ways that we weave the threads of our lives into a whole. Chapter Headings include: The Everyday Dress, The Courting Dress, The Fantasy Dress, The Buttons, The Glove and The Shoe.
Laser printed using Quark Xpress in Hoefler Text with Hoefler Text Ornaments. Hand-stitched paper and bead decorations and pin-hole patterns (from threadless sewing-machine needle perforations) adorn the pages throughout. Each two-sheet chapter signature is composed of a text sheet of Esse white paper and a chapter wrapper of grey, straw-embedded Ogura Chine. They are stitched together at the fore edge through gold-on-white paper diamonds, creating sleeves that often conceal hidden treasures. Gold-on-grey patterned Yuken endsheets and Reversible Unryu/Kozo Momigami cover paper complete the ensemble. Coptic binding. Cover title is printed on layered Japanese papers. Created during a yearlong Artist's Book Course at the San Francisco Center for the Book, taught by Emily McVarish and Steve Woodall, and featured in the year-end show, The Artist's Book: Unlimited Engagement. Edition of 25. (5.25 x 7 inches; 10 signatures.) Playful and tactile elegance.
