Duty Free Desiderata
Prose poems by Stratis Haviaras. Drawings by Jocelyn Sarah Webb. "One can almost taste the esthetic principles and function of life and matter marking seasons of Beauty, Energy, Desire, and Joy," writes Haviaras in these textual artifacts of a sensual philosophy. Filled with images, the poems evoke both the physical and psychical worlds at their intersection in human imagination and longing. They express, at once, both desire and the satisfaction of longing and are well complemented by Webb's prints which are, likewise, suggestive and representational, primal and evocative. The original drawings were converted to and printed from magnesium plates then overpainted with beeswax to add warmth and texture and echo the natural hue of the quarter-vellum spine. Five poems and seven illustrations, set as they are in impressed squares like etchings, function as windows of thought and of vision. Letterpress Bembo on Arches Cover with beautifully drawn calligraphic title. Sewn pages are French-folded sheets bound in creamy Oakdale paper over boards. Edition of 30, signed by poet and artist. (10.25 x 10.75 inches.) Printed at the Kat Ran Press, this is an exquisitely conceived and beautifully executed book. 2000.

Skinny This
Jocelyn Webb. With drawings by Michael Russem. A brief poem in two voices about the inherent mystery of strength in a woman's body. "You are skin and bones. . . . No. I'm sticks. Sticks and sticks, and stones. . . . I'm stone strong." Webb (book artist as well as poet) embodies the text in a tall, thin volume, with skeletal line drawings in warm sepia tones and a textured cover paper that mirrors the visual and textual message. Letterpress on handmade Japanese paper. Bound in beeswaxed, walnut-dyed paper over boards. Handsome and well-crafted. A serene but powerful reflection. The book itself is a poem. Edition of 50. (9.25 x 3.25 inches.)
$225
