Diva Divine
By Elena Mary Siff
Santa Monica, California: Elena Mary Siff, 2009. One-of-a-Kind.
6 x 8.5"; 18 pages. Found objects. Collage. Popsicle sticks and beads.
In this homage to Mexican artist Frida Kahlo (1907 – 1954), Siff combines collage and other found objects. The result is a "stick'' figure with the face of Kahlo tipped on. The skirt is a book of collaged images.
Elena Mary Siff: "My love of assemblage art and my love of book art caused me to combine these techniques to create book objects. Diva Divine is a good example of these blended art forms. I enjoy expanding the notion of what a book can be; in this case an art doll, a book and a piece of assemblage art which can be hung on the wall. Frida Kahlo's art and the Mexican fortunetelling loteria cards are inspirations to me, and I have combined my interests in both to create this book object."

City
By Arthur Rimbaud
Santa Monica, California: Elena Mary Siff, 1991. Edition of 5.
10 x 7.4"; 12 pages. Stab binding. Three etchings. Stiff hand-painted covers.
Siff uses a quotation from Rimbaud's "Illuminations" (1875) with her etchings and collages of city buildings. Interesting that what was true in the 19th century is still true in the 21st century.
"I am an ephemeral and no too discontented citizen of a metropolis considered modern because all known taste has been evaded in the furnishings and the exterior of the houses as well as in the layout of the city. Here you would fail to detect the least trace of any monument of superstition. Morals and language are reduced to their simplest expression, at last!..."
