Spirit
Land
Poems by Kim Stafford
and Gary Paul Nabhan. A collaboration produced by Prentice and Risseeuw
for the Dieu DonnÚ Papermill-sponsored Art of the Matter symposium
(1996). The book is two related sections, created for and in the
artists' home states and later stitched together to form a unified
whole. Prentice and Risseeuw selected as their theme the disappearing
flora in their respective western landscapes. The book is comprised
of two elaborate and layered reduction woodblock prints that depict
these landscapes. Prior to printing, the sheets, each made from
various fibers native to the areas, were sculpted at their edges
into mountains and mesas. They enfold a pair of poems, Stafford's
"Oregon Reunion of the Rare," and Nabhan's "Sonora
Desert Unfolding," and partial lists of the endangered, threatened,
and protected plant life from each region. The cover folder is a
mixture of Arizona and Oregon fibers plus soil and crushed shells.
Letterpress in Optima and Baskerville. This volume is an exquisite
reminder of the fragility of the land we inhabit. It inspires preservation
through the beauty and artistry of its presentation. Edition of
50 is signed by both poets and artists. Extraordinary and unusual
collaboration. Must see!
