| Palo Pallas: "The content of the recycled books I use, often dictates the structure of the Reading Chair. The content of the books is exceedingly important to me. I have a strong belief in subliminal message. I now use only books which I consider to contain merit. "Recently asked to use books by 19th Century American Authors, I felt led to read about them as people. So interesting were their lives, I realize they had to be Reading Chair Portraits. The elements used are symbolic, representing the lives of these authors." |

Portrait Reading Chair Series
With this series, Palo Pallas adds the element of content to her Reading Chairs. Each has a particular subject — Thoreau, Dickinson — and not only uses books containing texts written by the subject, but adds a context by incorporating biographical references, "quirks," or "identifiable characteristics".
Palo Pallas: "I am marrying my pleasures of construction and learning. This is a perfect combination for me as an artist. And further, everyone has a story and everyone sits on something!" |

Portrait Reading Chair: Thoreau
By Palo Pallas
Birmingham, Alabama: Palo Pallas, 2008. One-of-a-Kind.
11" high; 6.5" wide; 5.5" deep. Materials used: paperback; clock cogs; metal nail spike; gourd; mahogany; cherry dowel rods; ink; raffia; white wash; soft pastel; watercolor; gouache; adhesive; brass wire; ink; graphite.
In this series Pallas researches the subject of the portrait. She selects 'quirks' or 'identifiable characteristics" of that personality and incorporates those in the book sculpture. In this reading chair representing Henry David Thoreau she developed bars to represent his stint in jail. She added on the bottom of the chair circular writings in pencil quotes by Thoreau on civil disobedience. The cushion of the chair is an anniversary edition of Thoreau's writings (Penguin). The cogs are the machines Thoreau vowed to press against.
