Carousel
By Charlotte Murray and John Hastings
Everett, Washington: Charlotte Murray, 2011. Edition of 10.

6.75 x 4.5"; 14 pages.Images and book design done in Adobe Lightroom 3, Adobe Photoshop CS4, and Adobe InDesign CS4. Printed on Epson Ultra premium paper matte by an Epson Photo R2880 printer. Spiral bound.

Collaborative work by Charlotte Murray and her partner, John Hastings. Murray is the photographer and Hastings the poet.

John Hastings: "When Charlotte and I travel, there are always certain subjects that we seek out to visit and photograph. One of these is antique carousels. For me, they are reminders of the color and commotion of childhood. I enjoy watching the interactions of parents with their children. I never see straightforward happiness without also seeing the subtext of uncertainty and fear that is the constant to and fro of life. Charlotte loves the artistry of the carousel animals and the knowledge that she is seeing handmade creations.

"After Charlotte sorted through her dozens of photographs and selected those that she wanted to use for the book, she showed them to me and asked if I would write a poem to accompany them. When I handed her the poem, she said she nearly cried when she read it. It is, I think, one of our two or three best collaborations."

Partly Cloudy

Images by Charlotte Murray
Everett, Washington: Charlotte Murray, 2013. Edition of 25.

Printed on Epson Ultra Premium Presentation Paper Matte with an Epson Stylus Photo R2880 printer with Ultrachrome K3 pigment inks. Spiral bound. Signed by Hastings and Murray.

John Hastings and Charlotte Murray travel around the Western United States - Charlotte taking photos, John storing word images. Once Charlotte pulls together the images from the trip that she particularly likes, John writes a story or poem.

Partly Cloudy pairs Charlotte's photographs of clouds and landscapes (many from National Parks and Monuments from the US West) with John's poem "Partly Cloudy," which begins "When I was young I liked to lie / Beneath a partly cloudy sky / Imagining, if I could fly on the back / Of Pegasus. ..."
