Cetus
the Whale.
Text by Melville, Shakespeare, and Milton. With twelve engraved portraits
by Catherine Kanner. Edited by John Sheller. Melville pushed history
to its outer limits and turned time into space in order to find man,
and it is space which forms this stark and beautiful book. As Sheller
points out in the brief introduction, "Kanner's engravings are not
mere decorations accompanying texts, but a weaving of the original
materials with new hands. They bespeak the artist's vision of the
men who in their relations reveal truth." Both the pictures and the
texts are encompassed in a broad expanse of white which reveal the
physical persistence of Melville in the American imagination. Letterpress
printed in Bembo on Arches paper, and accordion bound by Allwyn O'Mara
with handmade endpapers. Selected for the 1997 Rounce and Coffin Award
and the Western Books Exhibition. Edition of 200. (34 pp.)

L. Stevenson on their life on the island. Kanner designed the book
with a Polynesian feel and created twenty-one original linocut illustrations
for the book. Letterpress printed by John Robinson, and handbound
