| Evelyn Eller: "Experimenting with the book format was a natural outcome of my work in paper collage. In my books I use traditional structures as well as sculptural and innovative forms. Handmade, oriental, and painted papers, book cloth, string, boards and glue are my materials. these materials are fragile yet durable." |

Transitions
By Evelyn Eller
New York: Evelyn Eller, 2006. One-of-a-Kind.
6 x 7 x 1"; 8 unnumbered leaves on handmade paper loosely laid into black plastic box lined with patterned paper. The leaves contain paper collages with snippets of text and image. Paper title on lid tipped onto matching patterned paper.
With a single photocopied image on most pages along with multiple definitions seemingly cut from dictionaries the collages set forth the possible base roles of a woman's life - girl, daughter, sister, wife, daughter-in-law, mother, mother-in-law, widow - along with the trappings of those roles as captured by language - girlish, fertile, womb, fertile, sisterly, womanly, widely.
Transitions suggests that what begins simply as girl/girlish becomes more and more complex through the transitions of a woman's life.

Altered Places
By Evelyn Eller
2002. Edition of 3.
8 x 9"; 8 pages. Each of the three in the edition are variants. Each is a collage of colored handmade papers to produce an outdoor scene “altered and edited from works by Robert Rosenbaum.”
John Arthur Shanks in The Artist's Magazines: "Evelyn Eller's collage landscapes are as carefully and delicately constructed as the rhymes of a pastoral poem. Rivers, ponds, paths, mountains, seas, sand, skies, land and grasses - ripped, torn and cut in paper - she orchestrates to capture the airiness of a summer day, the downy snowfall of early winter, or the desolation of a deserted beach. Working in paper, Eller moves and adjusts, scales and re scales the prime elements in nature."
Eller: "To communicate a mood, a feeling in each collage, I try to create the illusion of deep space... Once I focus on the distinct impression I want to convey, I select papers the same way a painter chooses paints. And like an interior designer, I lay swatches of paper together to arrange a texture and color scheme that best captures my own feeling. I usually use three papers plus one sheet for the background of the collage, chosen for a color and fiber that adds depth to the final assemblage."

Anatomy Lesson
By Evelyn Eller

The mud-like covers textured with fibers contrast to the balanced and calm collage on the interior pages. These interior pages represent the detached order of medical textbooks – in contrast to the blood and guts of real life? Science and art can remove reality to bearable distance?

Mail Art Variations
By Evelyn Eller
New York: Evelyn Eller, 1993. One-of-a-Kind.
9 x 11"; a one-sided accordion with 8 panels. Collage of original papers and color-copy papers. Bound in book cloth with collage paper title on front board.
Eller pays homage to Mail Art (also known as Postal Art or Correspondence Art), which began in the early 1960s with artists sending visual art through the international postal system. Eller's book has splashes of languages, scripts, and stamps throughout. On one page will be the original papers created by the artist. On the next will be a black and white photocopy. Across the pages are collaged words – transit, pacific mail, art, peace, love, life.
Evelyn Eller: "I utilize fragments of script, from many languages, in order to show the interrelatedness of different cultures and their commonality. ... In many of my books I manipulate the text in a purely visual form as pattern, without regard to its meaning, in these books I see the words as visual abstractions. In other works the content of the language is important to me. The maps, people, and text depicted in my art represent my hope that we can live together in peace and harmony."
