Well Read Flax
By Vicki Essig
Asheville, North Carolina: Vicki Essig, 2018. One-of-a-kind.

8.5 x 22 x 2" framed multimedia work. Materials: handwoven silk, paper with text, wood, dried flax. Frame by Daniel Essig. Weaving and design by Vicki Essig.

Vicki Essig: "Living in the mountains has taught me to be in wonder of nature and her artistic hand. On my daily hikes my pockets gradually fill with artifacts and curiosities that I find along my path. These small treasures that are often overlooked are archived into fine hand woven cloth where they are suspended in quietude. Many compositions incorporate nearly two hundred year old manuscripts and texts. The fragments of this rag paper, with barely detectable messages, are hand woven into the silk cloth producing an intricate structure that weaves the past with the present."

Literate Poppy
By Vicki Essig
Asheville, North Carolina: Daniel Essig, 2016. Variant edition.

5 x 7.5" (varies by piece) fiber weaving. Materials: handwoven silk, antique text sheets. Miniature book included in piece. 9 x 12" (varies by piece) wooden frame by Daniel Essig. Signed by the artist.

Vicki Essig: "I am fascinated with light and translucency, the contrast between the fragile, and the strong. With natural materials, I show the small and delicate as the powerful and significant. My current body of work has led to the use of pieces of nearly two hundred year old manuscripts that are woven with silk to form an intimate place. The barely detectable text becomes a focal point. The presentation of my work protects and showcases fragments of homespun rag paper and fragments of the hand woven silk cloth that I create, producing an intricate structure that has come full circle. In viewing my work, my hope is that you will for at least a moment, become lost in the discovery of the minute, the quiet of repetition, and beauty of nature and pattern."
