Last Night We Were Awoke: Lewis and Clark
By Brittany Sanders
2003. Edition of 200.
10 x 10" free-standing accordion book. In a night blue Japanese silk cloth portfolio case. Hand printed on mould-made Somerset Book Paper.
Memory of a journey. This second book from the press, evokes the memory of the Lewis and Clark expedition as it ventured into the unknown American wilderness 200 years ago. The title comes from Clark's description upon viewing the Northern Lights for the first time. The explorers' westward trip is presented through sky charts of the stars and planets exactly as they appeared to the explorers. Through the explorers' writing, we are drawn into their personal journey of experiences. Complemented on the reverse side of the night skies is a series of watercolor paintings that evoke the journey. Printed in overlays of multiple colors, the created effect is one of a dream or a memory long forgotten.

I Was There: Rumor Fable Exploit
Edited by Brittany Sanders
2002. Edition of 250.
8.25 x 11"; 112 pages. Letterpress on Somerset Book with some sections and images printed on translucent sheets. Includes a text pop-up, a packet of letters in an envelope, a book within a book, and more. Cloth over board cover. In slipcase.
A collection of stories, poems, photographs and illustrations on the theme of personal truths and perceptions. Conceived and edited by Brittany Sanders. With contributions by Anne Lamott, Richard Wilbur, Mark Salzman, Naomi Shihab Nye and a number of emerging and established artists and writers. Sanders sought to create a dialogue between art and text based on the question: "Where is there and does it ever really exist except in our minds and in how we tell our stories to each other?"
Sanders first heard the title statement, "I was there," spoken by a teacher when he talked about his experiences in Viet Nam. That declaration stayed with Sanders, who heard it as evidence of an emphatic personal truth, one which loomed large in the man's consciousness and had not faded with time. Pondering the ideas inherent in the question, she sought to evoke such truths from the invited artists. The book is conceived as a narrative moving from Rumor, the youthful, unclouded view, to Fable, fantastic truths, and Exploit, frontiers of thought. Each section contains seven entries.
